Our client's basic activity is plant breeding and seed production, focusing on developing high-performance, climate-resistant hybrid varieties of cereals (like rye, wheat, and barley) and other crops. They use advanced biotechnology, conduct extensive field trials, and provide expertise and support to farmers to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and high-quality seeds.

On their behalf, we are searching for a highly qualified professional for the following position:

Director Research & Development (Sunflower Breeding) - Romania

Purpose of the Position:
The continuation of the Research and Development department's activity for sunflower breeding.

Setting the strategic direction, planning and managing the breeding programs, and presenting results to the company's leadership.

Development of high-performance, competitive hybrids for South-Eastern Europe.

Place of work: Breeding Station at Pesac (Lovrin) Romania

Key Responsibilities:

  • Continuation of the current sunflower breeding program
  • Defining the development strategies for the breeding program for the coming period
  • Coordinating all research and development activities and ensuring effective collaboration within the company
  • Leading, supervising, and developing the breeding team
  • Overseeing the execution, documentation, and analysis of breeding projects
  • Preparing genetic progress reports and presenting the annual research report
  • Ensuring proper handling and protection of genetic materials, seed stocks, and equipment
  • Representing the department in external collaborations and with funding or partner institutions
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of all data and research materials
  • Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards

Performance Expectations:

  • Obtaining valuable combinations and high-performance genetic material
  • Successful registration of new sunflower hybrids both in Romania and outside the EU
  • Timely delivery of all stages and objectives of the breeding program
  • Ability to adapt the breeding program to unforeseen conditions (weather, pests, diseases)

Requirements:

  • University degree with a PhD in Plant Genetics and Breeding. PhD can be replaced with 20+ years' experience.
  • Strong experience in plant breeding (preferably sunflower)
  • Proven leadership, decision-making, and analytical skills
  • Fluent in Romanian and Serbian or Hungarian; in case of Serbian and Hungarian English becomes a requirement
  • High level of responsibility, organization, and reliability
  • Commitment to confidentiality and compliance with work safety regulations
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork and travel as required

Our Principal is seeking a motivated Corn Breeder for Central & Eastern Europe. The successful candidate will have a strong plant breeding, agronomy, genetics and statistics background to establish and lead a corn inbred-hybrid development and testing program for the target market segments in Central & Eastern Europe. The candidate is expected to develop resilient hybrid corn varieties with important traits required in the market. The candidate is expected to use a combination of traditional plant breeding methods and molecular breeding approaches to accelerate the process of variety development. The candidate is expected to provide leadership in variety testing, interact and manage relationships with third-party service providers.

This successful candidate is responsible for forecasting and executing approved budget and capex in coordination with global, regional, and in-country leaderships to deliver on the short- and long-term product development strategies. The candidate will be an integral part of the R&D team and is expected to work with other corn breeders globally in Company and to interact with the local/country Technology Development (TD), Commercial and Marketing teams. The candidate is expected to provide leadership and development to a team of Research Agronomists and Field Assistants. The successful candidate will be based in Hungary.

Job Responsibilities

1. Lead all corn breeding activities in Central & Eastern Europe. Involvement in all technical aspects of the breeding program including but not limited to population design, crosses, selection, seed preparation, management and oversight of plot trials, data collection, data analysis and reporting of results.

2. Lead the development and evaluation of new hybrid combinations and test crosses. Conduct multilocation agronomic yield trials and disease evaluations.

3. Provide leadership to team and coordinate data collections, note taking, and assessment of yield and disease trials. Travel to offsite locations several times a season. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

4. Research Station management including driving improvements. Also, operation of the breeding nursery. Forecast and execute approved budget and capex.

5. Give updates or presentations as required as part of Product Advancement meetings, R&D group meetings. Coordinate with TD and SPR teams and provide technical support to commercial and marketing teams.

6. Provide input to team to continually improve safety protocols and procedures.

Skills & Requirements

  • PhD or MS in Plant Breeding (preferably Corn Breeding) with strong background in genetics, statistics, agronomy, or a related field of study.
  • minimum 3-5 years, but desirably 7-8 years of experience, preferably in the seed industry or related government research institution.
  • Proficient in MS applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Able to work well independently and cooperatively with others in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including proficiency in English language.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem solving.
  • Multicultural Agility. Ability to work in a corporation with global network.
